Yes, we know we’re a DJ company so we’re supposed to only talk about parties and fun because, well, that’s a sound marketing strategy.
And we should only show you pictures of packed dance floors and of pretty lights because, uh, that’s what you want to see, right?
Well, here’s to breaking the rules, which is really what SIM has been about since Day 1.
We want to take a minute to talk about a somewhat uncomfortable and certainly counterintuitive subject: the Holiday Blues.
The truth is that for all the joy, love, relaxation and general sense of well-being that the holidays bring to many, there are an appreciable number of people who instead experience a feeling of emptiness, loneliness, melancholia and even despair this time of year.
We want to let you know that we acknowledge, we try to understand, and above all we care.
You are not alone out there. Holiday time depression is very common, and many things can trigger it or contribute toward it building inside.
For whatever it’s worth, we humbly and lovingly offer the following resources for you or a loved one who may need help to get through their day, week or month:
- Manage your expectations
- Stay within your budget on holiday gifts. There are PLENTY of nice things that can be had very affordably for your loved ones, and always remember that it’s the thought that is put into the gift that counts, not what was spent on it.
- Organize your time and pace yourself. Don’t feel obligated to do more activities than would make you feel good and happy.
- Remember that the holiday season doesn’t banish reasons for feeling sad or lonely: it’s ok for these feelings to be present in you or your loved ones.
- Beware of excessive drinking. It can amplify and thus exacerbate any negative feelings already present.
- Live in and try to make the best of the present: try not to compare it to “better days gone by”.
- Play with any kids that are in your life. Watching how they enjoy the holidays can bring you back to the true joy in them.
- Try celebrating your holidays in a new way.
- Try celebrating with some new friends, or perhaps some old friends you haven’t seen in a while. Regardless, try to make sure your time is spent with loving and caring people.
- Spend extra time with your pets and buy them something a little bit special if you can.
- Volunteer. Do something for others who are in need. It’s the best medicine.
- And mostly, no matter what, take care of YOU.
