We ask this question because they sure seem to be leaning on crutches while they are working!

We occasionally have the pleasure of attending weddings as a guest, and sometimes we see and hear things which make us think a little bit. Mostly, we are trying to see what we can learn to do better, but sometimes (well, a lot, to be honest) we see things that we are happy we don’t do.

Like this thing about the crutches.

What does that mean, you ask?

Here’s a loose example of what we’re talking about:

Wedding MC Announcement #1:

“Ladies and gentlemen! At this time, we’d like to ask for a round of applause for your wedding party as they enter the room!”

“Your wedding party! A round of applause, ladies and gentlemen!”

Wedding MC Announcement #2:

“Ladies and gentlemen, how about a round of applause for the bride and groom as they come to the dance floor for their first dance at this time?”

(and, at the end…) “A round of applause for Mr. & Mrs. Smith, ladies and gentlemen!”

Wedding MC Announcement #3:

“Ladies and gentlemen, at this time, how about a round of applause for the bride and her father as they come to the dance floor for the Father-Daughter Dance”

(and, at the end… wait for it…) “Ladies and gentlemen, the bride and her dad – how about another round of applause?”

Annnnnd, a round of applause. Annnd a round of applause, ladies and gentlemen.

At this time…

Truly, as a professional MC who takes pride in my work and has trained at least 100 others to be the same, this kind of thing makes me want to put a fork in my eye. Crutch words. Every single announcement rife with crutch words.

There are so many ways one can address crowds and get people to spontaneously applaud at the right times for things that they appreciate. I don’t need some paid…

You know what? I’m going to stop right here. You get the idea. In the name of creativity and professional public speaking, please, for God’s sake, demand more from your MC. You should expect more from your MC.

Here at Sound In Motion, you will certainly get more from your MC. And those crutches? We already did the rehab work during training. They don’t need them anymore : )
